چکیده

It now becomes apparent that condensed DNA toroid which emerges in a poor solvent condition can be realised in the framework of the non-linear sigma model on a line segment. In fact, the classical solutions of the model, i.e., of the bending potential exhibit toroidal forms, and fit well with the delta-function term of the attractive interaction. The proposed theory is in good agreement with experimental observations that the toroid is the ground state. In this paper, we give a rigorous proof that the solutions are indeed the exact solutions of the equations of motion with the first derivatives of the attractive interaction term. We also show a refined mapping to experimental data, considering the finite size effects of the cross section and of the chain length. PACS numbers: 87.14.Gg, 87.10.+e, 64.70.Nd, 82.35.Lr

Controlling the size of nanoscale toroidal DNA condensates with static curvature and ionic strength.

The process of DNA condensation into nanometer-scale particles has direct relevance to several fields, including cell biology, virology, and gene delivery for therapeutic purposes. DNA condensation has also attracted the attention of polymer physicists, as the collapse of DNA molecules from solution into well defined particles represents an exquisite example of a polymer phase transition. Here ...

Low-energy states of a semiflexible polymer chain with attraction and the whip-toroid transitions.

We establish a general model for the whip-toroid transitions of a semiflexible homopolymer chain using the path integral method and the O3 nonlinear sigma model on a line segment with the local inextensibility constraint. We exactly solve the energy levels of classical solutions and show that some of its classical configurations exhibit toroidal forms, and the system has phase transitions from ...

Effect of interaction shape on the condensed toroid of the semiflexible chain.

We investigate how different microscopic interactions between semiflexible chain segments can qualitatively alter the physical properties of the condensed toroid. We propose a general form of the Hamiltonian of the toroid and discuss its analytic properties. For different interactions, the theory predicts different scaling behaviors of the mean toroidal and cross sectional radii, rc and rcross,...

DNA release dynamics from bioreducible layer-by-layer films.

DNA release dynamics from layer-by-layer (LbL) films is an important aspect to consider with regards to localized gene delivery systems. The rate of DNA release and the condensation state of DNA during release are of particular interest in the field of gene delivery. A hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (RHB) containing bioreducible disulfide bonds is used to form interpolyelectrolyte complexes wi...

Coexistence of coil and globule domains within a single confined DNA chain

The highly charged DNA chain may be either in an extended conformation, the coil, or condensed into a highly dense and ordered structure, the toroid. The transition, also called collapse of the chain, can be triggered in different ways, for example by changing the ionic conditions of the solution. We observe individual DNA molecules one by one, kept separated and confined inside a protein shell...
